December 2021

Message from Project Unity Founder, Richie Butler

As 2021 draws to a close we are grateful to all of our partners for trusting us to steward the work of bridge-building. Project Unity’s reach has impacted tens of thousands in North Texas and beyond. We are committed to finishing 2021 strong.

When I played football at my beloved SMU I made a commitment to leave my best on the field...to give it my all. When the game was over there would be nothing else left in the tank because I left it all on the field. My goal was to not get to the end of the game and lose steam. As with Project Unity, we will continue to push forward because we know the state of our community is at stake. You can count on Project Unity to show up every day giving our very best for the community we serve. We will move full speed ahead and give you our all.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you and the greater community in which we all live and work. Stay safe this holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in 2022!

Together We Learn

Project Unity relaunched our first in-person Together We Learn with Jesuit School Dallas in November. Two hundred senior classmen participated in the classroom session where officers spoke to them about what to do when stopped by police, followed by a traffic stop simulation that engaged students in hands-on traffic stop scenarios. It was an eye-opening experience for students and faculty. Over 90% of students reported that their knowledge and understanding of laws and how to act improved as a result of attending the course. Special thanks to Mr. Rich Perry, Jesuit Social Justice and Community Director for advocating that this program take place for students. Project Unity hopes to host this program each fall at Jesuit to continue educating teen drivers. For more information on how to bring Together We Learn to your school, email us at TogetherWeLearn@projectunity.net.

Corporate Partner Highlight

Project Unity is pleased to highlight our partnership with Catalyst Health Network.

Catalyst Health Network is a network of independent primary care physicians who work for the health and wellbeing of our community. Project Unity started our relationship with Catalyst in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. We formed a partnership to bring Covid-19 testing to underserved and low-income communities of color around the Dallas area. Together, we tested over 7K people for Covid-19. This partnership also included CPL Labs who served as our lab partner. As the focus transitioned from testing to vaccinations, we continued our partnership in 2021 to make vaccinations accessible to those same communities where transportation, healthcare, and even technology is limited. As of today, we have vaccinated upwards of 3K individuals ages 12 years old and up. We are now embarking on our pediatric vaccination effort this month so that we can have entire families of appropriate age vaccinated.

In addition to being a healthcare partner, Catalyst Health Care Network is a participating corporate partner in our Together We Can program. They have hosted several dines this year for employees and preparing to host their final dine of the year this week! Our relationship has also provided a volunteer source where employees volunteer as facilitators for the Together We Dine program. Several employees are currently in training to become facilitators. Catalyst is an example of how a partnership can expand from addressing the needs of the community to becoming a DEI resource and volunteer outlet for its employees. Thank you Catalyst for being a great partner!

Jesuit Senior Summer Intensive Program Partnership

Jesuit students gave a helping hand cleaning and organizing the Project Unity storage this month. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it! Students learned the importance of what it takes the run and operate a non-profit, starting with storage! Thanks so much!
Project Unity is excited to partner with Jesuit High School as part of their social justice Senior Summer Intensive Program. Six seniors selected Project Unity as their organization of focus to learn about what we do, our community impact, and to serve with us in the community. The seniors will help plan and implement the Together We Learn and Together We Can programs for their entire senior class.

  Volunteer Together We Dine Facilitators

Thank you to our volunteer facilitators for helping to navigate safe and unique conversations on race relations for the community, corporations, and other groups that hosted Dine events. It’s been a great year! If you are interested in learning how to become a TWD facilitator in 2022, please email us at  volunteers@projectunity.net.
  • Wanda West, Sergeant Of Police, Dallas Police Department, facilitator since 2020
I enjoy volunteering for Project Unity's Together We Dines because I am able to be engaged in, and in front of conversations surrounding systemic racism, social injustice, and racial healing. I really enjoy hearing everyone's different perspectives and learning their stories.
  • Dianne Carlson, Partner, Carlson Legal PLLC, facilitator since 2021
I volunteer because I want to contribute and support the spread of this wonderful idea to bring people together in a safe space to have honest conversations about race. We all need to hear about the experiences of other people who share this country with us so that we better understand what challenges our country is facing. We also need to meet our neighbors so we can love them better.
